Step 1: Remove coral from your aquarium. Gently shake the coral so the polyps will retract before you remove it from the water. Now determine where you will make your cuts. It's always preferable to cut polyps off as whole polyps or bi-laterally through the mouth, but is not at all necessary.

Step 2: Polyps on the outer edge can be removed with little damage to the polyp at all, so I decided to start there. Cutting most of the skeleton below the polyp will allow the frag to encrust onto the plug itself much quicker and give the new polyps an unshaded, horizontal vantage point to absorb light. Still to this day I am amazed at how little of the base skeleton that acans need. I normally try to get the base down to roughly 1/8th".

Step 3: After you make the cuts below the flesh, turn the coral over and cut out around the polyp itself. Now either cut through the rest of the base or gently pry the polyp off.

Step 4: It's pretty much impossible to make such precise cuts with the bulk of the colony, so I like to cut a tic tac toe pattern across the back of the coral. Now simply use a flat headed tool to snap the segments apart .

Step 5: After you snap it, there will be some tissue holding the pieces together. Use a razor, scalpel, etc. to cut the connecting tissue.

Step 6: Rinse off your cutting and place in a bowl of tank water. Try to rinse off all the dust and coral shards that the dremel made. They can be an irritant and cause infection.

Step 7: Mount the cutting. Dry off the cutting and the mount it is going to be attatched to before glueing. This allows the glue to set stronger. Alow at least one minute to dry before submerging.

Step 8: Rinse the coral off and return it to the aquarium or frag tank. Its best to put it back in a spot with similar lighting and flow as where it origionally came from.
